Wednesday, 28th

ECM, Dreamshifter, Three Point Tilt play the Surry Hills Excelsior on Wednesday February 4 to kick off the Blueprint Sessions - held every Wednesday for the month of February.

Big Heavy Stuff release their new album, Dear Friends and Enemies, February 16 on Redline Records. The album was recorded between October 2002 and July 2003, a period of international political turmoil and eventually war, inspiring singer/songwriter Greg Atkinson to find greater meaning in the album's title. The band will tour nationally this February/March in support the release.

TZU launch their debut album, Position Correction, on Saturday February 28 at the Corner Hotel, Richmond with special guests TBC. The album was recorded at Ancient China on the fringes of Melbourne, and produced by Peter Brennan formerly of Good Buddah fame.

Man Bites God tour Adelaide this February with two shows at the Regal Tent - Garden of Unearthly Delights, Cnr Rundle St & East Tce - just prior to the opening of the Adelaide Fringe. The first show on Saturday Feb 14 will be the Adelaide launch for their debut self-titled album, while Sunday Feb 15 will showcase a more eclectic set of songs including tracks from their upcoming Adelaide Fringe show, Rock and Roll High School. Jimmy Little releases his new album Life's What You Make it this April on Festival Mushroom Records. Produced by Brendan Gallagher, the album features Jimmy's interpretations of songs by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, U2, PJ Harvey, Neil Young, Brian Wilson and Elvis Costello. In other news Jimmy was awarded the Order of Australia for 50 years of service to the entertainment industry, his ongoing work in school literacy and numeracy and work for the reconciliation process.

Friday, 23rd

Royalchord launch their new album, Nights On The Town, on Sunday February 29 at the Corner Hotel. They will be supported by special guests Machine Translation and Grand Salvo. The album was recorded at Simon Ground's Dollhouse Studios and is released on Cavalier Music.

Push Over 2004 is happening Monday March 8 at Luna Park, Melbourne. Performing at this all ages, drug and alcohol-free event will be Spiderbait, Antiskeptic, Sunk Loto, TZU, Blood Duster and Tiltmeter. The festival will also play host to the grand final of Push Start - the statewide music showcase for young and emerging performers in Victoria - with Dysprosium, Quarterlight, Negative Purpose, Left Right Out, Envy, Her Nightmare, Foist, The Vasco Era plus two more to be announced competing. There will also be a hip hop arena featuring performances by Joelistics (TZU), Jezroc, DJ Onenut and more to be announced. Sekiden hit the road in February for a run of dates in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The tour coincides with Pinball Summer - the fourth radio single from their debut longer player Junior Fiction - hitting the airwaves. Mid Youth Crisis reform once again - almost two years since their original reunion shows - for a run of shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide kicking off in February. Tuesday, 20th

Frigid, after calling it a day September of last year, returns with a new home at the recently refurbished @Newtown - previously the Newtown RSL. The eclectic weekly event swings back in action starting Sunday February 29 and entry is free. For more information consult www.snarl.org

Strange Tenants travel up from Melbourne to play an exclusive performance as part of Sick Kids Skank #4 at the Waterloo Hotel, Queensland on Saturday March 27. This event helps raises much needed funds for the Mater Children’s Hospital Music Therapy Program.

Stag - forming in May 2003 and featuring members of The Standing 8 Counts and SixFtHick - play Sydney on Friday January 30 at The Annandale Hotel. They will be joined by SixFtHick, Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side and Rocky Outcrop

Summertime Grooves is a series of six free outdoor concerts every Sunday from January 25 to February 29 at the Victorian Arts Centre Lawn Stage. Kicking off the programme this coming Sunday from 2:30pm onwards will be the Scared Weird Little Guys, Man Bites God, Hardrive Bluegrass Band, and The Six Foot Four - Barber's Shop Quartet. After The Fall enter the studio on Tuesday January 20 to commence the recording of their debut album. The recording starts at Sydney's Big Jesus Burger Studios, followed by time in the band's home studio on the Central Coast. The as yet untitled album is due for release in April/May of this year.

The Pictures hit the road through out February and March taking in 25 shows across five states as part of their 'Ground Control' tour. Charles Foster Kane head into Rockinghorse Studios, Byron Bay in early February for the first session of their forthcoming debut album. This will be followed by flying down to Sydney to mix at Spacejunk Production House with producer Tim Powles. From this shall emerge the first single scheduled for release in the early part of the year. In other news the group will be playing a residency at Rics Cafe every Thursday night in February.

HOWLfest - festival of women's creativity - happens January 28 till February 1 at venues around Newcastle. Quarter Acre embark on a mini tour of Sydney and Adelaide this January to spread the word about their EP, Live From The Traffic Islands. Gyroscope headline an exclusive two-stage all-ages punk extravaganza on Friday January 30 at TLC - 265 Canterbury Road, Bayswater, Melbourne. Joining them on the main stage are Sounds Like Chicken, Kiss Chasy, The Tall Poppies and Pixelated. Appearing on the second stage are Codger, Silence Means Eveything, One Odd Reason, Off By Heart and Sound Gauge. Doors will be open between 6 and 11pm, admission is $10. The Annual East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival returns for its fifteenth year on the Easter weekend of April 8 to 12 at Red Devil Park, Byron Bay. Wednesday, 14th

The Loop Orchestra launch their new release, Not Overtly Orchestral, on Friday February 8 at SOMAWO - 7 Nickson St, Surry Hills. Kicking off at 8pm it will feature support coming from Pimmon, Ian Andrews, The Vocabularinist and guest DJ, Markus Detmer from Berlin - who runs the Quecksilber label, which is releasing the record.

Museum - a monthly instrumental and lo-fi music night, that began in August last year - kicks off for 2004 on Friday January 30 upstairs at The Planet Cafe, 388 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. St Kilda Festival organisers have announced the acts for The Beach Concert, the main stage for this year's festival. Leonie Smith, a jazz vocalist from Sydney, has just released her debut album, Sweet Jazz. She is backed by saxophonist Julian Gough, pianist Matt Baker, guitarist George Golla, bassist Stan Valacos and drummer Morrison. The album is available from Birdland records, Folkways in Sydney and most jazz record stores in Australia.

Thursday, 8th

Deloris launch their EP, Playing The Spaces, in Sydney on Saturday January 31 at the Hopetoun Hotel supported by Purplene and The Rebel Astronauts. The EP - a taster of the band's upcoming third full length album, Fake Our Deaths - is available now from all good independent record stores. Before then the band performs in Melbourne on Thursday January 15 at The Tote, supported by Minor Ache (ex-Braving The Seabed & By Ferry Or Steamer).

Atomica, a new rock-house-hybrid outfit that formed twelve months ago, tour Victoria this summer performing: Thur Jan 15 @ Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy supporting Irwin Thomas; Fri Jan 16 @ Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda; Sat Jan 17 Ruby's Lounge, Belgrave. The group features Dave Leslie (Baby Animals) on guitars/vocals, Kai Chambers on drums, Rob Taylor (Def FX) on keys/guitars/vocals and Sheriden Nelson on lead vocals.

Club Acoustica Melbourne, following its hugely successful launch in December 2003, presents its second showcase on Tuesday January 20 at the intimate Manchester Lane - 234 Flinders Lane, City. Performing on the night will be Missy Higgins, Rambunctious, Rod Davies, Matt Kimberley and Freight. Doors open at 7:30pm, with the first act on at 8pm sharp; entry is just $6. Tuesday, 6th

The Avenues launch their debut EP on Saturday January 24 at The Rosemount Hotel with special guests Little Birdy, The Fergusons, Steve Parkin and Daniel Bull solo. The EP was recorded at Debasser Studios and jointly produced by the band and Joel Quatermaine (Eskimo Joe); it will be distributed in record stores all over the country from the first week of February by MGM Distribution.

Steve Romig launches his new album, Touch, at the end of March in Melbourne - date and venue to be announced soon. The fourteen track album was recorded over two and a half years at Metropolis Audio in Melbourne with engineer Doug Brady and co-produced by Steve and Doug. Special guests on the record are Mike Rudd, James Uluave, Jessica Paige and Norman Falvo. The album is distributed by Sound Vault Records.

By Design invites all independent and unsigned bands and artists to submit material for inclusion on their annual compilation CD to be released nationally in July 2004. The second volume of these compilations, Independence: Volume Two, will feature a number of both established and emerging independent acts from around Australia. Potential acts will need to download a submission form from www.bydesignrecords.com and follow the instructions; submissions are open from now until Friday, 26th March, 2004.

Loin Groin leave the sanctuary of Melbourne this January for their first interstate tour in three years. The tour will take in dates in Sydney, Yamba, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
