Tuesday, 31st

Nighstick ventures out of Brisbane for four shows in Melbourne next weekend. The group features Heinz Riegler (Not From There), Tam Patton and Martin Lee (Regurgitator). The band's debut self-titled EP is out now on Dot Dash/Inertia. Further details »

Funhouse '04 marks its debut as an all ages boutique music & arts festival, Saturday October 23 at Victoria Park, Herston, Brisbane. The line-up features Jet, Rocket Science, The Sleepy Jackson, Rocket Science, Self Righteous Brothers, Sekiden, Nightstick, Spazzys, After The Fall, The Nation Blue, Dick Nasty and Wish For Wings. Mere Theory launches its new EP, Disengage, with an all ages show on Saturday September 4 at Enigma Bar, Adelaide. Special guests are The Hot Lies, Hi End Audio and Shane Shepherd. The Sunnyboy's This Is Real, a two CD set compiled by Tim Pittman, is released September 17 on Feel. The release features all the hit singles, b-sides, the original four track EP, rare and unreleased versions, and an entire disc of live radio broadcasts taken from the band's peak period of 1981-1982. Also included is a 36 page full-colour booklet featuring rare photos, poster and handbill art. Additionally, an authorised 10,000 word biography by Tim Pittman and Murray Engleheart comprehensively details the band's history.

Shutterspeed undertakes a whirl wind tour of the UK this September, with dates in London, Manchester, Wales and Glasgow. Before heading overseas the band plays one last show on Wednesday September 8 at Troubadour, Brisbane. Further details »

Sound No Sound is on once again this Sunday September 5 at the Bat & Ball in Surry Hills, with performances from Scott Horscroft Ensemble, Donna Hewitt & Julian Knowles, and Mark Bradshaw with the Sydeney Symphony Orchestra. Doors open 5pm and the event runs till 10.

Decoder Ring has released, Somersault, its second album and also soundtrack to the new Australian film of the same name. Directed by Cate Shortland, the film will show in cinemas from September 16. Thursday, 26th

Dappled Cities Fly release the single, Cream, in stores September 13 through Smash Music - with whom the band recently signed. The single is the second to be lifted from the band's forthcoming debut album, recorded with Jonathan Burnside, and due out in October. Tuesday, 24th

Infusion releases its new album, Six Feet Above Yesterday, in stores Monday September 20. The album will also be gradually released in Japan, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greece and the UK. In support of the release, the group undertakes a national tour in September and October, before heading overseas for a tour of Europe in November. Further details »

Velure hits the road this September and October for an east coast tour. The band is working on its debut album, which will be dedicated to its late producer, Erik Lloyd Wolkoff (Coldplay, Portishead, Café del Mar) who died suddenly, early in the project. Love Outside Andromeda releases its self-titled debut album in stores September 6 through Shock Records. Late August until early November, sees the Melbourne outfit embarking on an extensive national tour, funded by the government's Contemporary Music Touring Program. Further details »

Deloris releases its long awaited third album, Fake Our Deaths, in stores August 30 on Dot Dash, distributed by Inertia. In support of the release, the band is touring nationally throughout October and November with special guests.

Snowman tours Melbourne in late August to launch its debut mini-album, Zombies on the Airwaves of Paris, performing: Thur Aug 26 @ 161; Fri Aug 27 @ The Rob Roy; Sat Aug 28 @ The Pony (early show); Sun Aug 29 @ Good Morning Captain (3pm-6pm). The band then returns to its hometown of Perth to launch the record on Saturday September 4 at the Rosemount Hotel, with special guests Capital City, Eleventh He Reaches London, Stickfigures and The Tigers.

Monday, 23rd

Small Mercies releases its debut EP, Off The Record, in stores September 6 through Modern Music/Sony. In support of the release, the band performs a run of September dates in Sydney and Queensland with Tapered Edges: Sat Sept 4 @ Charlton Bar, Manly, Sydney; Thur Sept 16 @ Troccadero, Gold Coast; Fri Sept 17 @ QSM Basement, Brisbane.

The Crayon Fields launches its new EP, The Good Life, on Saturday August 28 at The Public Office, North Melbourne. The band is supported by special guests Mid State Orange, The Tranquilisers and Oh Belgium!. The extended player is released on independent label, Cavalier Music.

The Blackeyed Susans celebrates fifteen years with a show on Friday August 27 at the Cornish Arms Hotel, Brunswick, with special guest Marcel Borrack. The band will perform tracks from Shangri-La, the ARIA nominated album of last year, plus a selection of songs from its extensive back catalogue.

Bodyjar has recruited a new drummer in Shane Wakker, filling the void left by former drummer Ross Hetherington. The band is currently writing material for the follow up to its 2002 album.

Icecreams Hands releases You Can Ride My Bike, an album compiling its best tracks, this coming October on Rubber Records. The release will feature exclusive liner notes on each track, a brand track recorded recently at Yikesville Studios, plus a bonus disc featuring a collection of rare and currently unavailable b-sides.

Arbuckle tours Sydney in mid September, performing: Wed Sept 15 @ Vic On The Park w/ Owenell & Bonking; Thur Sept 16 @ The Hopetoun Hotel w/ Russian Brides & I (love) Space. The band is also performing in its hometown of Brisbane, every Monday night during September in acoustic mode at Ric's Bar.

Remake Remodel tours Sydney, Wollongong and Canbera this week. In other news, the band is currently in the recording studio laying down tracks its for forthcoming debut long player. Assisting the recording process is a grant the band received from Arts Victoria. Further details »

Sunday, 22nd

The Small Goods launches its new EP, This Is The Show, on Friday September 10 at The Corner, Melbourne. Joining the band is special guests Dappled Cities Fly and The Tranquilizers. Featuring Even front man, Ashley Naylor, on the title track, the EP is out now on Half A Cow Records.

Dan Bull launches his debut self-titled EP on Saturday September 11 at The Rosemount Hotel, Perth. He will be supported by Steve Parkin, Charles Jenkins and The Panda Band. The five track EP was recorded at Debasser Studios with guest musicians Joel Quatermaine (Eskimo Joe), Andy Lawson (The Avenues), Rod Aravena (End Of Fashion), and Tom Craig (The Avenues).

Wednesday, 18th

Screamfeeder releases Introducing: Screamfeeder, a 22 track album featuring singles and various tracks from 1992 up till now, in stores next week. The instrumental and lo-fi music night Museum celebrates its first year anniversary at The Planet, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy on Friday 27 August, featuring This is Your Captain Speaking, Ben Frost's new project School of Emotional Engineering and If I'd Known Then... - aka I Want a Hovercraft's Sarah-Jane Wentzki - plus live visuals by SJ and Ruby. $7 entry, doors open 9pm. The third annual Brisbane Rock'n'Roll Festival happens Saturday September 18 at The Rev - Warner St, The Valley. The line-up for 2004 consists of: Cosmic Psychos, The Cants, Nightstick, Vegas Kings, Hekawis, Hell Crab City, The Vaginabilles with special guest Fred Negro, The DangerMen, Gutterball Pete and The Shaolin Drunks, The Busymen, The Wild. Tickets are on sale now at Rockinghorse Records and Skinnys, with earlybird tickets (first 100) two for $35, pre-solds after that $20 each or $25 on the door on the night.

Friday, 13th

Addiction 64, after nearly seven years, has called it a day. The band performs its final show with a licensed all ages gig on Saturday September 11 at King Pin Bowling Lounge - level 2, Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre, corner Victoria and Burnley St, Richmond. The Meredith Music Festival returns for its fourteenth year, on the weekend of Friday 10 to Sunday 12 December, at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre, near Meredith, Victoria. Tickets will go on sale Thursday September 2. For more information consult www.mmf.com.au

The Smallgoods ventures northward this August to launch its new mini-album, This Is The Show, out now through Half A Cow Records and MGM distribution. Jet returns to local shores this October for a run of dates in major Australian cities. Regurgitator will records its next album in a transparent plexiglass studio in Melbourne's Federation Square. The band enters the studio on August 31, and will remain there for 21 days. The whole process can be witnessed on Channel V half an hour daily, 24/7 live feeds from the inside on Bubble TV Foxtel digital cable, and via the websites www.bandinabubble.com and www.regurgitator.net. Full Fathom Five and Topology have collaborated together with end result being the album, Future Tense, in stores August 19 on Valve. The idea for the electronic and post-classical group to team up for record was conceived three years ago, back in mid 2001.

Ponyloaf releases its debut long player, O Complex, in stores August 19 on Valve, distributed by MGM. The record is launched with an installation, visuals & art all accompanied by sounds of the album, on Friday August 20 at The Farm, George St (next to Dendy), Brisbane City.

Thursday, 12th

Weave is a new instrumental night showcasing Melbourne's burgeoning instrumental post-rock scene every second Thursday at Bar Open, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. With two bands playing extended sets each fortnight, the first three nights feature: The Boats and Adlerseri (12 August), International Karate and Laura (26 August), and Silver Ray and This is Your Captain Speaking (9 September). Entry is just $5 and doors open at 9pm.

Cartwheel is releasing a four track EP called Man, In Love With Machine on UK based independent label, Valentine Records. The tour coincides with the band's European tour, happening throughout the months of August, September, and early October. Further details »

The Panics heads overseas for a series of gigs in England, kicking off in late August. The band will continue to work on its forthcoming album in studios in England. In other news, Miles Wootton the drummer from the band is soon release his own album of instrumental hip hop under the name Safe City.

Wednesday, 11th

Dot Dash is a new label to promote exclusivley Australian artists, setup by Remote Control and Inertia Distribution. The label has three artists scheduled for release in the coming weeks: Nightstick's debut EP in August 16; Deloris' new album, Fake Our Deaths, in late August; New Buffalo's debut album, The Last Beautiful Day, in early September.

School Of Emotional Engineering, brainchild of Melbourne's Ben Frost, releases its self-titled album in stores August 16 on Architecture Label, distributed by Shock. In other news, Ben is currently co-producing the second album for Sydney band Gelbison.

Antiskeptic continues its August tour in Sydney next week, performing: Friday Aug 20 @ Carringbah Bizzo's; Saturday Aug 21 @ @ Annandale August 21. The tour coincides with the release of the limited edition 7 inch single of More Than Kind - taken from the album, Aurora - plus the b-side 'First Time Out'.

Hotlies releases its debut EP, Streets Become Hallways, in stores August 16 on Resist Records. The band is currently undertaking a national tour with After The Fall.

Wednesday, 4th

Urthboy - a founding member and MC in The Herd - releases his debut solo album, Distant Sense of Random Menace, on August 9 through Elefant Tracks. The record features the production talent of Elgusto (Hermitude), Count Bounce (TZU) and The Herd. The album will be released as both a digi-pack CD and an extended 12" vinyl release, featuring an exclusive remix courtesy of Hermitude. Late October Urthboy will take his live show - featuring Ozi Batla (The Herd) and Elgusto (Hermitude) - to the road to promote the recored.

Shutterspeed launches its new four track EP, Turn To Black, in Sydney this Friday August 6 at The Mandarin Club, 396 Pitt St. Special guests will be Major and Rockingham Sugar. Copies of the new EP will be available on the night for just $5 - there are a limited number and they can only be bought from the band at this stage.

Joseph Leonard - drummer for Founder and bass in The Woods Themselves - has released a solo album entitled, Soft On The Small Moon, out now on Heavy. In support of the release, Joe has assembled a band consisting of: David Cotsios (The Woods Themselves) on guitar; Neil Lovermen on on bass; Bon (El Mopa) on drums; Kurt Ousley (Founder) on keyboards. An album launched is planned for early September.

Cut Copy releases its new five track single, Saturdays, in stores August 16 on Modular Recordings. Taken from the album, Bright Like Neon Love, the single is accompanied by remixes of the title track, and past single Future. In support of the release the band heads out on the road, from late August to early September, for a national tour. Special guests for the east coat dates are Wolfmother and The Midnight Juggernauts. Kaleidoscope performs a series of dates along the east coast this August, to promote the new single, In and Out. Lifted from from the recent album, Voluptua, the single also features an acoustic version of the title track. Further details »

The Sand Pebbles launches its new album, Ghost Transmissions, this Friday 6 August at The Rob Roy Hotel, Fitzroy. The band is joined by special guest Black Cab, plus DJ Sir David - The Savage Sportsman.

Sunny Disposition has emerged from the studio, having finished recording its debut EP, due for release early next year. The group performs Wednesday 11 August at The Builers Arms Hotel with Chinless Kings and Cam Butler. Available free at the gig, though only 20 copies are left, will be the band's single Halo On Your Head.

Utopia Records celebrates 25 years in the music retailing business with an all day, all ages event on Saturday August 14 at Manning Bar, Sydney University. Kicking off at 3pm in the afternoon, the event will feature performances from: Cog, Frankenbok, Daysend, Brace, Walk The Earth and Omerata. David McCormack & The Polaroids have released their second album, The Truth About Love, on Laughing Outlaw Records. The album was recorded over several sessions in late 2003 and early 2004 with producers Magoo and Wayne Connolly. The Guild League peforms shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Wollongong, to launch the new album, Inner North, out now on Candle Records. Darren Hanlon's new album, Little Chills, is to be released in stores on Monday 6 September, through Candle Records and distributed by MGM. With the help of Bree Van Reyk (Rebel Astronauts) on drums and vocals, the album was recorded in Tuscon, Arizona with engineer Craig Schumacher. In support of the release, Darren will be touring with a full band around the country, throughout October. Becus has released its debut self titled EP on independent label Wheeler Dealer Records. The Melbourne trio launches the six track extended player on Friday 3 September at the Empress, North Fitzroy, with special guest Tugboat plus others to be announced.

Mr Wednesday is heading to Melbourne for the first time to be part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The ambient-experimental outfit from Adelaide teams up with Pretty Boy Crossover, Seth Rees (I Want A Hovercraft) and Season to present an audio-visual performance at Pony on the 26th of September, 3rd and 10th of October respectively.

Monday, 2nd

Charles Jenkins - lead singer/songwriter of the Icecream Hands - releases his debut solo album, Bungalow, on Monday 9 August through Parole Records. The record was produced and recorded by Shane O'Mara and features Peter Jones (Lisa Miller, Crowded House), Michael Barker (John Butler Trio), Davey Lane (You Am I) and Rebecca Barnard. Late August sees Charles kick off a tour to launch the record, joined by many of the aforementioned guests. Further details »

Peabody records and mixes its second album, The New Violence, from August 16 to 28. Like the band's first album, David Trump will be on engineering duties, and Jamie Hutchings will be producing. The album is slated for a release in 2005, with a single to preceed it.

Ampt is a series of under 18 concerts to be held on the second Friday of every month at the Somerville Mechanics Hall, Mornington Peninsula. The first gig is on Friday 13 August featuring Brock Downey plus local Peninsula bands The Cupid Initiative and Famous By Association. Doors open at 6.30pm and the cover charge is $10. Andrew McCubbin & The Hope Addicts launch their new album, Steer, on Friday August 6 at The Tote, Collingwood with supports Disaster Plan and Conway Savage. Joining Andrew and band on stage will be special guests Philippa Nihill, Julitha Ryan from Silver Ray on cello and Shamus Goble from Penny Ikinger's band on drums. With a New Zealand tour in the pipeline for September this will most likely be the last time to see Andrew play in Melbourne until October.

78 Saab releases its new EP, Beat of Your Drum, August 30 on Ivy League Records. The title track is taken from the band's forthcoming second album, Crossed Lines, recorded with producer Tim Whitten.
